                The Validity of Job Interviews

For many of us, job interviews are a source of anxiety. We cannot help but feel afraid that, by answering a question incorrectly in the interview room, our chances of obtaining a potentially great job will be ruined. The best we can hope for is that the interview leaves an accurate impression of who we are. Whether this hope can be realized, however, depends on the characteristics of the interviewer, the interview itself, and the interviewee.

The most important determinant of whether the impressions of candidates are accurate is the interviewer.? Interviewing others is a challenging task. Does the interviewer have sufficient training and experience? Has he or she prepared for the interview by perusing each applicant's resume? Is a consistent tone of voice and level of formality used with all interviewees? Does the interviewer take notes as the candidate responds to each question, or rely solely on memory? Experienced, well-trained interviewers who are adequately prepared, take notes promptly, and maintain a consistent interview style are more likely to have accurate impressions of each interview subject.

Not all job interviews are created equal. Interviews can vary in duration from less than ten minutes to as long as several hours. Some interviews take the form of a casual chat, while others adopt a structured Q&A format. These and other factors play a significant role in determining whether the interviewer's impression of candidates is accurate or not. In general, interviews that are longer and more structured enable the interviewer to make more reliable judgments of interviewees. To ensure an equal basis for comparison, the interview length and format should also be consistent from one job candidate to the next.

Finally, interviewees, too, have an important role to play in whether the impressions they leave behind are accurate. The interviewer will typically assume that the personality displayed by job candidates in the interview room more or less reflects their normal state. If an otherwise bright and perky person enters an interview room looking tired and groggy, the interviewer will perceive him or her as slow and affectless, even if the candidate's fatigue was merely the result of a bad night's sleep. Similarly, if candidates have recently suffered emotional trauma or are excessively anxious, the impression that they convey could be very misleading.

In conclusion, whether an interview is an accurate way of sizing up a prospective employee hinges on the characteristics of the interviewer, the interview itself, and the interviewee. Since job candidates cannot decide who interviews them or how the interview is set up, the most they can do is to be well-rested and well-prepared, put their best foot forward, and hope for the best.

                Para 1

①?For many of us, job interviews are a source of anxiety.

② We cannot help but feel afraid that, by answering a question incorrectly in the interview room, our chances of obtaining a potentially great job will be ruined.

③ The best we can hope for is that the interview leaves an accurate impression of who we are.

④ Whether this hope can be realized, however, depends on the characteristics of the interviewer, the interview itself, and the interviewee.

                • the interview room 面時間

③ Does the interviewer have sufficient training and experience? Has he or she prepared for the interview by perusing each applicant's resume?

④ Experienced, well-trained interviewers who are adequately prepared, take notes promptly, and maintain a consistent interview style are more likely to have accurate impressions of each interview subject.

② Interviews can vary in duration from less than ten minutes to as long as several hours.

③ Some interviews take the form of a casual chat, while others adopt a structured Q&A format.

④ These and other factors play a significant role in determining whether the interviewer's impression of candidates is accurate or not.

⑤ In general, interviews that are longer and more structured enable the interviewer to make more reliable judgments of interviewees.

⑥ To ensure an equal basis for comparison, the interview length and format should also be consistent from one job candidate to the next.

                • take the form of 以…形式

                • Not all sth is created equal.

                Para 4

①?Finally, interviewees, too, have an important role to play in whether the impressions they leave behind are accurate.

② The interviewer will typically assume that the personality displayed by job candidates in the interview room more or less reflects their normal state.

③ If an otherwise bright and perky person enters an interview room looking tired and groggy, the interviewer will perceive him or her as slow and affectless, even if the candidate's fatigue was merely the result of a bad night's sleep.

④ Similarly, if candidates have recently suffered emotional trauma or are excessively anxious, the impression that they convey could be very misleading.

                • assume that…

                Para 5

?In conclusion, whether an interview is an accurate way of sizing up a prospective employee hinges on the characteristics of the interviewer, the interview itself, and the interviewee.

② Since job candidates cannot decide who interviews them or how the interview is set up, the most they can do is to be well-rested and well-prepared, put their best foot forward, and hope for the best.

                • hope for the best
